Tech intervention adds heft to security infrastructure of 100 smart cities!!!!!The government has set an ambitious target to implement all projects under the Smart Cities Mission by June 2023. However, only 10 cities have managed to complete over 90% of the projects. An ET analysis showed that 29 of the 101 cities have completed less than 50% of projects. Cities also seem to be targeting low-value projects, with the average value of completed projects being almost half the average value of ongoing projects.

The Smart Cities Mission

was launched by the Hon' Prime Minister on 25 June 2015
to promote cities that provide core infrastructure, clean and sustainable
environment and give a decent quality of life to their citizens. It aims
to drive economic growth and improve quality of life through comprehensive
work on social, economic, physical and institutional pillars. 100 cities
have been selected to be developed as Smart Cities have been selected to
developed as Smart Cities through a two-stage competition.

National Smart Cities Mission

is an urban renewal and retrofitting program by the Government of India with the mission to develop smart cities across the country, making them citizen friendly and sustainable. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing the mission in collaboration with the state governments of the respective cities. The mission initially included 100 cities, with the deadline for completion of the projects set between 2019 and 2023. The effective combined completion of all projects as of 2019 is at 11%. As of March 2022, 3577 projects out of total 6939 tendered projects have been completed, utilizing ₹60,073 crore out of total tendered amount of ₹191,294 crore.
